Explore Ensemble: infinite murmurs

‘Light infinitely faint it is true since now no more than a mere murmur’
Samuel Beckett.

Wrap yourself in a fragile sonic tapestry as Explore Ensemble weaves transcendental music around the cathedral’s magnificent architecture. Returning to Scotland after their landmark debut at London’s Wigmore Hall, the ensemble has crafted this concert around the haunting and sinuous beauty of murmurs—an immersive spatial collage for nine soloists by leading international composer Rebecca Saunders.

The radiant, swirling resonances of Cassandra Miller’s Perfect Offering set the scene for the ambience of murmurs, whilst Oliver Leith’s witty and nostalgic 664 Love songs ends the evening with a wry smile. Winner of a prestigious 2021 Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation prize, and described as one of the UK’s ‘top new music bands’ (Kate Molleson, BBC Radio 3), Explore has established a reputation for virtuosic performances and inventive curation. Their outstanding musicianship brings the cathedral to life in a kaleidoscope of instrumental textures and colours.
