Hebrides Ensemble

Join pioneering Scottish chamber music collective Hebrides Ensemble, hot on the heels of their performance at the BBC Proms, for a fresh and eye-opening programme of works for strings and clarinet. Led by renowned conductor and cellist William Conway, the ensemble takes pride in making new music familiar, and familiar music new. 

Their captivating programme for GCF2022 offers renewed perspectives on the work of two much-loved compositional giants: Mozart and Bernstein. The rarely heard Adagio for Basset Horn and Strings showcases Mozart’s trademark elegance—written shortly before Così fan tutte, this beautifully simple work exists only in an enigmatic manuscript fragment and – like Bernstein’s witty and charming Variations on an Octatonic Scale – is virtually unknown. Complementing these hidden gems, the dark beauty of Penderecki’s lyrical clarinet quartet forms the cornerstone of this performance, offset with beguiling contemporary music by Helen Grime and David Fennessy. An eclectic and thought-provoking evening of exceptional music-making, not to be missed.
